Marrying Dan Hoyt, who was himself a science-fiction author as well as a mathematician, in 1985, she would go on to become an American citizen in 1988. Gaining a Masters in Modern Languages and Literature, she would minor in German and major in English, while also speaking Swedish, French, and Italian. She would then grow up in Porto in Portugal, learning in both Portugal and America, as she later attended the University of Porto.
